06 Feb Tasty Snacks I’m Loving
Snacks can be just as nutritious and tasty as a healthy homemade meal. Some people view food is fuel, others eat for pure enjoyment and flavor. Why not DO BOTH!! Right?? I’m going to share some of my fave snacks when your on the go or don’t have time to get a meal in.
First off, fruit and veges are SUPER portable for snacks! Apples, oranges, bananas, pears, grapes, carrots, celery sticks, cut up broccoli, cauliflower…..you get the point. For various reasons this may not be convenient due to lack of cool storage for fresh foods and some people are watching their sugar intake. Let me be clear, I’m not condemning fruit as they are full of nutrients, but, sugar is sugar though and some of us are addicts! It’s all about balance.
Lets talk brands. Perfect Bar was created by the Keith Family as they wanted to get their kids to eat more vegetables so they created whole food powders made from kale, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, pumpkin and cauliflower. Ya!! That’s a big variety of nutrient dense veges!! They added these superfoods to peanut butter and honey and boom! The perfect bar! These bars are super tasty! They have a variety of flavors and sizes available. Most of flavors have dairy in them minus the fruit and nut flavor. They also have a new flavor out called walnut brownie. I personally limit my dairy so I enjoy these on occasion or go for the dairy free one. You can find them online here. You can also find them at your local SuperTarget, food coop, Natural Grocers and some Costco’s carry them in bulk. I just looked at their online store and they have a salted caramel flavor out now – YUMMMM!! The great thing about these bars (minus the dairy for some) is the are filled with wholesome ingredients, healthy fats and good dose of protein to fill and fuel you up!
Lara and Epic Bars are another great wholesome, on the go snacks too. They are made with real ingredients and full of flavor too. Lara bars are gluten free, dairy free and a few flavors are Whole30 approved. Check out all the flavors:
Epic meat bars have been around a bit and are a great source of quality meat protein without hormones, steroids or antibiotics. They are tasty and filling. You can find them in stores such as Super Target, your local Coop, Natural Grocers and online here.
Epic has also come out of with a protein bar too made with real food ingredients. These bars are filling as well and can hold you over until your next meal without needing to indulge in a sugary snack that will leave you feeling blah after your sugar high departs.
NEXT is CHOCOLATE!! I love me some gooooood chocolate. Here are some of my faves!
First off – lets talk about that jar of gooey, yummy chocolate spread by 4th and Heart. It’s made from ghee, which is clarified butter (dairy free) and flavored with chocolate, dates, and madagascar vanilla. Basically it’s healthy chocolate frosting that you can put on your cupcakes, pancakes or just eat straight out of the jar like I do – LOL! It’s loaded with healthy fats and ghee has your fat soluble vitamins A, E, and K along with butyric acid which lowers inflammation, stabilizes insulin levels and promotes a healthy gut lining which is amazing for those suffering from crohns or ulcerative colitis. I think I will add a blog post about ALL the health benefits of ghee. To be clear, I’m not saying ghee will heal your crohns or ulcerative colitis – it can be a healthy swap for other seed oils that are disease causing and very inflammatory. You can find Chocti at Natural Grocers, HyVee (for my Iowa peeps) and Amazon to name a few.
One of my FAVORITE chocolate bars now is Hu!
Hu bars are made from real food ingredients and sweetened with a little coconut sugar (low glycemic index) making it a healthy alternative to get your chocolate fix. I have found these on there online store here and Thrive Market. You may also find them at your local food coop specialty stores.
Last but not least is Eating Evolved! They have amazing chocolate bars, coconut butter cups, and keto cups in a variety of flavors!! I love their cups in pretty much all the flavors! The mint is a refreshing after meal snack.
Eating Evolved’s famous saying:
“CHOCOLATE: IT’S FOOD, NOT CANDY”
Their chocolates are made with real food with out any processed sugars or oils that can be toxic and inflammatory to our body. It’s loaded with healthy fats from coconut and sweetened with low glycemic coconut sugar. If your looking for a Whole30 approved chocolate snack – check out their keto cups!
I have found the keto cups are a good pick me up between meals as the healthy fats feed my brain and wake it up!
