About Me

Hey!  I’m Tammy.  Welcome to Urban Soul Food!

I have been a Registered Nurse for over 20 years now.  I went into nursing as I enjoy helping people and have always enjoyed the science behind the human body.  My experience has been working in critical care (taking care of open heart patients) to working as the Mental Health Nurse Case Manager at our local VA clinic.  My nursing career has afforded me a varied experience in treating and healing the human body physically and emotionally. Upon our last move a few years back I took a job as a school nurse – which I’m still doing:).  With this job being part time and not as intense as my previous jobs, I was looking for something to supplement my time.  I was learning from a close friend about Functional Medicine and healing your body through the food you eat.  In Nursing, western medicine focuses on your symptoms and treating your symptoms….generally with medication.  Functional Medicine dives in to the root cause of your symptoms and treats you individually as a whole (mind, body and spirit).  My good friend introduced me to IIN (Institute of Integrative Nutrition) and their health coaching course.  When I read about their program, it immeidately resonated deeply with me.  I was ‘IIN’!  I learned over 100 different dietary theories and how mindset is just as important as the food we eat.  Personally, my world was opened up to alternative therapies to heal past emotional wounds that were affecting my body physically and mentally.  I was able to connect with dots about myself on why I had certain symptoms, ailments and what triggered it all.  I am forever grateful for the new path that I was shown and the profound healing it has granted me and continue to pursue.  There are a few titles I can choose from to call myself from my IIN training:  Holistic Health Coach, Integrative Nutrition Coach, Health Coach….they all basically mean that I have gained a strong foundation of knowledge to help people heal through food and mindset. What we eat, where we work, who we spend time with all can have a positive or negative affect on our health.  If you look deeply into those areas, you have the power to make changes to make them ALL a positive influence in your life!!  If you need help with that – lets connect:)!
